Tale of the Tape: “Broken Halos” vs “Dirt on My Boots”

It’s time for another look at the numbers to see if we can predict a winner in today’s Song of the Year Tournament matchup.  We’ve got Chris Stapleton bringing his giant killer song “Broken Halos” to take on a song that had to go to overtime to move on, Jon Pardi’s “Dirt on My Boots”.  Let’s see how the numbers say this will play out!

Chris Stapleton came into round 1 against Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road” looking like a major underdog, and he comes into this round 2 matchup the same way.  “Broken Halos” was not a huge commercial success only reaching #25 on the Country Airplay chart, and #13 on the Hot Country chart with 252,000 in sales.  That didn’t matter at all in round 1 though.  “Broken Halos” blew out one of the hottest songs in the tournament securing 80% of the votes against Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road”.

04/03/2016 - Jon Pardi - 51st Academy of Country Music Awards - Arrivals - MGM Grand Garden Arena Arena - Las Vegas, NV, USA - Keywords: Vertical, Red Carpet Event, Annual Event, People, Person, Music, Award, Portrait, Photography, Arts Culture and Entertainment, Attending, Celebrities, Celebrity, Academy Of Country Music Awards 2016, 51st Annual ACM Awards, Arrival, Nevada Orientation: Portrait Face Count: 1 Headshot - False - Photo Credit: PRN / PRPhotos.com - Contact (1-866-551-7827) - Portrait Face Count: 1

“Dirt on My Boots” by Jon Pardi is the oldest song in the tournament this year, actually being released in September of 2016, but climbing to the #1 spot on the Country Airplay chart in March of this year and reaching #2 on the Hot Country chart.  It also totaled an impressive 722,000 in sales, but it barely squeaked out a victory over another powerhouse, Luke Combs “Hurricane”, by one vote in overtime!

The numbers say Jon Pardi should find his way into the final four, but based on round 1 performance, I’d say Chris Stapleton is going to be tough to beat, and the fact that he’s a Kentucky native is only going to help.  But this is the tale of the tape, and you have to go with the numbers, so “Dirt on My Boots” is the pick, but it should be a lot closer than it looks on paper.  Now it’s up to you!
