Tale of the Tape: “Better Me” vs “Craving You”

It’s time to fill out the final spot in the final four of this year’s Song of the Year tournament! Today puts Montgomery Gentry against the duo of Thomas Rhett and Maren Morris, it’s “Better Me” vs “Craving You” in the divisional finals of the Duos/Duets bracket.  Let’s look at the numbers.

“Better Me” moved on in round 1 in what has to be considered a mild upset over “It Ain’t My Fault” nabbing a whopping 78% of the vote! The numbers otherwise aren’t too kind to Troy and Eddie.  “Better Me” never got the recognition it may have deserved on a national level, maxing out at #60 on the charts.  Clearly there is some sentimental love for this song as it is the first single released since Troy’s untimely death, and we’ve all seen how being from the Bluegrass State can help you bring in the votes too.

“Craving You” did exactly what it was supposed to in round 1 easily topping Chris Janson and Tim McGraw’s “Messin’ with Jesus” with 73% of the vote.  The numbers say this one should be tough to beat.  It reached #1 on the Country Airplay chart and #3 on the Hot Country chart.  “Craving You” sold 384,000 copies, and has performed well this year on the Froggy 5@5.

If you’re looking strictly at the numbers, Thomas and Maren should win in a landslide.  However, we all know that Froggy Country doesn’t always follow the national trends, and Montgomery Gentry holds a special place in a lot of hearts.  I’m going to say Thomas Rhett and Maren Morris squeak out a close one with Montgomery Gentry performing better than the numbers say, but barely missing a trip to the final four.  It’s your vote that matters though!
